This was one of the fics on my radar since the summaries came out, and imo, it doesn't live up to its potential at all. It has at its core a cool psychoanalytical (or literary?) theory about seven archetypes - the Sage, the Father, the Mother, The Child, The Maiden, The Trickster, the Hero, and Dean gets into Sam's consciousness after the Hell Wall breaks and encounters these seven to get to Sam. The idea is really cool, but the execution was so meh.

The archetypes are predictable to the point where the Trickster is the Trickster aka Gabriel. It's like the most straight-up, literate, superficial interpretation of the idea. Reminds me of that one time my English professor asked the class to find a song that would match "The Bluest Eye" in spirit and people picked something with lyrics about special and darling girls being bullied at school. Oh, and Jess is the Maiden, the innocent, which is my least favorite interpretation of her. So then Dean meets these very predictable characters along the road, and they tell him very old, predictable things done in canon and three hundred fics before this one that all come down to the idea that Sam has a low opinion of himself and a boatload of guilt (and he's in love with Dean). These characters have no distinct voice and all kinda sound the same, which I guess could go along with the idea that they're parts of Sam's psyche, except they don't sound like Sam either. They kinda just talk and say mean things, and then Dean moves on. There is a nice buildup to the Ego being at the center, the real Sam with all his damages... and then Dean gets there, and there is Sam with tears in his eyes hugging him. So much for foreshadowing.

I feel like the author got inspired by this very cool idea, and I think she should've been able to got to much further creative lengths with it than she did. It really is the most boring, superficial take on the theory, with a side dish of foreshadowing that leads to nothing. It's not a badfic by any stretch, the writing is okay, but it's anticlimatic as all hell. There's nothing bad about it but nothing good about it either.

ayrt

Meme has poisoned me with paranoia. I'm trying to decide if it's a serious suggestion or if you mean it sarcastically, in the name of defending the fic, "no one can criticize a piece of creative work until they can prove that they can do better" type of thing.

But assuming I'm just paranoid, it would be pretty douchey to lift someone else's fic idea even if I was interested, which I'm not. I just like discussing fics, and this one had a very cool idea that I wish wasn't done so superficially.

na

It's not like people don't get inspired by each other's fic all the time. Look at all the coffee shop AUs. I don't think it would be douchey.

(I thought ayrt was being serious, FYI.)

It was not meant sarcastically, but reading the comment I can see why you would think so (sorry) You just sounded so inspired by the Jungian archetypes idea.

Yeah, sorry, paranoia is serious business :D It is a pretty cool idea, imo. I personally don't want to write it but maybe someone else will one day.
