Is Dean becoming "gayer"?

(Anonymous)
So I read several metas that says Dean seem to be showing less interest in women and more in men on show. I fully support the idea that for some people sexuality is fluid so I don't worry about whether or not Dean used to be straight or not. But do you find him "gayer" (I know is not an elegant way to say it.)?

Re: Is Dean becoming "gayer"?

I think that anyone who believes they'll actually show Dean being in a relationship with a man is kidding themselves. The CW isn't that willing to rock the boat.

That being said, I don't think we've seen Dean interacting with women as much, but I don't know that it means he's "gayer." I would put it more to the alcoholic depressive fugue he's been in; he's no longer interested in things he used to like, and sex is one of them. Or maybe there just haven't been as many women on the show. IDK.

...captcha was "shipHot him." I don't know how to react to that.

Sexual/romantic interest or just interest, nonnie? SPN has pretty much always been all about the dicks on the dancefloor when it comes to friendships.

Sam was celibate for 3 years on the show, where was the he's turning gay meta.

Re: Is Dean becoming "gayer"?

(Anonymous)
Sam isn't as pretty as Dean so there's isn't a chance he'll turn gay.

I think Sam looks just as pretty as Dean soo...

He was still pretty Dean-ishly gross about the strippers' locker room in 8x03.

You just reminded me, back when spoilers said Dean would meet a monster who would help him out in Purgatory, how excited I got thinking it would be the woman-djin from season 6.

So, thanks. *is annoyed*

Re: Is Dean becoming "gayer"?

So, a man that's not a womanizer is not 'gayer' than one that is? He's more mature (eww that word, I guess. Would be awful to see him act as a frat boy when he's 35.
And for a lot of different reasons, people may lose interest in sex. In any case, he's be 'more asexual', right? Because he's made no sexually chaged comment about men, afaik.

IDK, I always find these fans that claim Dean is gay, or whatever, very offensive. They love stereotypes and seem a bit desperated.

Re: Is Dean becoming "gayer"?

Lack of interest in sex doesn't make a person asexual any more than lack of interest in sex with women makes a man gay. You are partaking of stereotypes as much as the people you complain about do.

Links to these meta posts, plz? I haven't come across any of them, but it seems like a very silly concept. A lack of sexual interest in women doesn't equal an increase in sexual interest in men. It's not like sexual attraction to men and sexual attraction to women are in a constant ratio and thus by removing an attraction point to one, you have to increase it to another.

I thought it was clear that Dean's general asexuality is related to his morbid depression. And who knows? Maybe he just grew out of it. Sometimes people like to have a lot of one night stands in their twenties but don't go for that in their thirties. And anyway, Dean has had an actual, ongoing love interest all of once in the series: Lisa in S6. He's had a few other women that he's been interested in, but Lisa is his one and only ongoing relationship. So exactly how does having a year long relationship with a women in the second half of the series mean that he is somehow more "gay" in the second half of the series than he was in the first half? And if he was more interested in men right now, how would that remove his canon (and ongoing) attraction to women? Wouldn't it be better said that he's being written as more bi?

What a weird question.

Haha, I nearly typed "what a weird question" as a comment right when this was first posted. Actually, I did type it, but things froze when I tried posting, and I decided it wasn't a worthwhile enough contribution to persist. So, I totally agree. And your first paragraph is a well-phrased summary of why it's peculiar and makes little sense.

I think Dean's primary form of connection to others right now is combat-based homosocial bonding. This is neither particularly gay nor particularly surprising for someone in his circumstance.

In fact, I'd argue, like some of the nonnies above, that Dean's primary bonds have always been homosocial, starting with the family unit of himself, John, and Sam, and adding Bobby, Castiel, and now Benny. In the past, he tended to supplement that with casual sexual relationships with women, but he's doing that less now, whether that's because he's older and less interested in casual sex (and feels like he is unable to have more serious relationships with women, because of the Lisa fiasco) or lowered sex drive due to depression and PTSD, or some combination of the two.

The there have been a few exceptions, like his romantic relationship with Lisa, or some form of combat-bonding with Ellen & Jo, and Anna. But those are fairly rare. It's one of the reasons I really wish Benny had been one of the female monsters they've killed: I think it would have been very interesting to see Dean forming that kind of friendship with a woman, particularly one he wasn't sleeping with.

I don't think the writers yet realize women who aren't mother-figures and yet don't feel intrinsically compelled to jump on either Sam or Dean's dick can exist in their universe, especially in a friendly, long-term connection capacity. Jo was probably the closest they ever got to that.

Which is sad, because some of my favorite relationships on TV right now are m/f bromances. (Emily/Nolan on Revenge, Joan/Sherlock on Elementary, Luther/Alice on Luther...) I wish more shows would hop on that train.

But this fandom has always been more welcoming to slash fodder than giving women a chance, so the writers are probably just going for what they know will be accepted. Giving both Sam and Dean significant new women in their lives at once probably would not be.
