this nonnie's comic-loving soul had a look at the art and now may not read the fic because Dean's using a gun. Can anyone tell me if they fight humans or monsters? Vigilantes who use guns on people are a squick of mine, blame Batman.

He doesn't use a gun or kill people, nonnie. Makes a point of it. He's a superhero, after all.

SPOILERS

*cries* What the heck happened to this fic? It was going so well! Dean is a superhero and the God/angel arc was being rebuilt through a superhero lens and I was ready to rec the shit out of this story at that point. Then all of a sudden, Cas is a space lizard alien instead of an angel? I really thought I clicked on the wrong link when I clicked on the next part, but that's really what happened and it was too big a leap for me, I guess, and the fic just didn't recover. It's too bad, because 3/4 of the fic is so wonderful! Then the end just...derails.

I love superhero AUs but this was such a letdown. Prose was pedestrian, characterization was awful, the humor was smug and unfunny, and the ~surprise twist~ makes me think that the author needs to be less full of herself and to get a better beta who will call her out on this shit.

I read this based on a love for Superhero AUs. I agree with many of the people above that the lizard monster twist through me a bit. While the fact that Cas was alien (or at least not human) was clearly telegraphed, even with the bit in the museum the lizard reveal was a bit WTF. I also wanted more explanation for the demons if it was aliens rather then supernatural, which I got in the author's notes but not in the fic itself.

I will say I liked that Cas was non-human and the characterization worked, but even so the fic was just serviceable. Basically, read if you are bored, but not worth a reread.

Had me until lizard shape shifting alien...I was loving the incorporation of the angels and demon arc and placing it in a superhero setting, but no we get a dinosaur from space.

But then again Marvel and DC both have some crazy coocoo alien/non-human fuckery in their comics, so I guess the author was just trying to draw some elements from that...?

I don't even know...I would reread this up until like the last chapter of this.

The story had a well-written plot, but the Sam characterization was so awful I couldn't get past it. This story is basically a season four AU where Sam and Dean are superheroes who know nothing about the supernatural and Dean never went to hell. Jess was attacked, but instead of dying something unexplained happened to her leg/legs (only one leg is mentioned as having a problem, but she's in a wheelchair, so IDK). Anyway, since she's not dead, she and Sam are married. Despite all of this, Sam is the exact same person he was in season four. He keeps sneaking off with Ruby to try to kill demons and Lilith, only now he's not just hiding stuff from Dean, he's hiding stuff from his wife (which they keep fighting about), too, and that was a step too far for me. There's no actual cheating implied, but it came uncomfortably close to it for me. (There's a "deleted" scene that one can read where it's explained that Jess is lying to Sam, too. She actually knows what he's been up to all along, and Dean knows she knows. That doesn't make anything better to me. It just makes Jess and Dean look bad.) Plus, since Dean never went to hell, there's no reason for Sam to act like this. Actually, Dean is rather inexplicably like season four Dean, too. He hates Ruby and is constantly trying to get Sam away from her, despite not having a clue that she could be a demon, which is the reason he didn't trust her in show.

I see there have been a lot of comments about the weirdness of Castiel being an alien dinosaur from space pretending to be an angel. It was out-of-nowhere and pointless, but it didn't affect my enjoyment of the fic. It seemed minor in comparison to the characterization issues.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned yet is the fact that at the end of the fic Castiel returns to his home planet. That hardly seems like a happy ending to me, especially in a crackish fic. If this were a drama, it could have been written very movingly about duty coming first or something. But this is a light-hearted comedy for the D/C Big Bang. The only thing I can figure is the author is deliberately planning a sequel, which I think is kind of underhanded.
