Anyone read through this yet? Good? Bad? Neither? I'm a little wary of the warning for "depictions of brain damage and mental illness".

Yeah, I'm hanging out waiting for a review for similar reasons. Fearing dubconnish or infantilising vibes.

I read it last night. Its a solid read, not one of my favs this fest but pretty decent. If you like a dose of Sam in your D/C this isn't for you.
Spoilers below.

Sam's dead post-apoc & Dean's so traumatized he's lost his memory & language skills. Its mostly domestic fic about Cas nursing him back to health & how Dean copes (its all Dean's POV). No idea how realistic the PTSD is, but its an okay read & avoids the excessive weepy schmoop & woobieness in most such fic. I found both Dean & Cas pretty well characterized.

I didn't read this the first time around because I was pretty burnt out by then, but I am glad I picked this to read this time. For a fic that's over 50K long, with only 2 characters for most of the fic, and set almost entirely in one location, this fic was very ightly written and nothing felt like fillers. A testament to how the writer delved into the emotional and physological aspects of Dean and Cas, how Dean dealt with the lost of Sam and how the two of them explore their relationship within this context.

The first half of the fic detailed Dean's slow recovery from an unknow trauma, he lost his language skills, he had no memory of who(or what) he is, he was a blank state. All of that was told from Dean's POV. I think this was a ballsy choice on the writer's part but it paid off. It was fascinating to see both learning new things like a child would but also regaining knowledge from his past. It was also established fairly early on Dean's not de-aged as he did have sexual urges and he did masturbate. Also seeing thing from Dean's POV gave the audience a sense of ominous dread because he was afraid of the outside world, and we were not told what lied beyond the house where Cas and Dean resided.

Dean regained his memories of the trauma (it was Sam-related, but not about Sam falling into the pit) half way through the fic and the story gained a new momentum. The second half was focused on Dean mourning Sam, and also the very complicated relationship between Dean and Cas. There was a new threat in Dean's dream and Cas' ability to keep that bay was dwindling.

I don't think I can say anymore without spoiling the story. I found the ending satisfying and logical given the set up. Both Dean and Cas were very well characterized in the fic. Cas was very much the canon Cas, and Dean, even in his handicapped state, retained enough of his "Deaness" for the audience to feel relatable. The writing was solid, the writer took their time with the set up. Nothing felt rushed nor dragged on. This fic was not plot-heavy but insteap it was very introspective. If you like your fic with a strong emotional resonance you will enjoy it. This nonnie surely did, and recommends it highly.

I have no idea why I didn't read this the first time around. I found it quite compelling and pretty hot (though I kinda felt the sex was skimped on--aimed at, and then circumvented at the last minute). I thought I caught everything, but I'm glad this got commented on again today so I could go back on it and look, because it was an interesting long read.

Fuck yeah, I know right? I'm the nonnie above you and I'm all HOLY SHIT I almost didn't read this fic at all and would've missed out.

Mostly I was dubious to try this out because I wasn't convinced a long fic with (mostly) only two characters could be pulled off without being boring, and this one was done just right to keep me interested and engaged through Dean's recovery.

I was also turned off by a wrong impression I got from one of the comments above that Sam isn't in this fic at all -- he isn't there in the flesh, sure, but he's deeply part of Dean's psyche and the reason he's so messed up in the first place, so the despite his reliance and forged new connection with Castiel, Sam is so very emotionally present.

It's also not as plot-light as I thought it would be. It's not plot heavy, but it doesn't meander as uselessly as I thought it would. The story has a destination, and it's a good one.

There's only one sex scene on-screen, and that's blowjob and frottage. Their other times are all off-screen.

The art's bright and vibrant, but it's not exactly correct to the details of the story.

We find out quite a ways into the fic that Dean's in his mid-40s and his hair's greyed, so he's no longer the strapping young man he appears to be in the art.

I think the part that reveals Dean's age/How long Cas' been taking care of him was a pretty powerful moment and I'd be sad if I was spoiled by the artwork (I always checkout the art first). I suppose the artist could've chosen a muted color palatte (or even a monochromatic one) to side step the problem.

A lot of art spoils the fic they're for so that's a risk you take when you view it first despite spoiler warnings but, yeah, I like the surprise of learning how old Dean is in the fic. Maybe it was a conscious choice on part of the artist.

I think muted colours or going monochromatic would've fit in with the tone of the story better, but that's way more YMMV.
