spn_reversebang: [1028] Untitled by dearthursday [Dean/Castiel, R]

"Our Hearts Drown the Distant Drums" by hipokras

http://spn-reversebang.livejournal.com/75271.html

Word Count: 9,985 words

Summary: You meet the love of your life in the unlikeliest of places, in the unlikeliest of ways. For Castiel, it was while chasing down the thief who stole his sister's parasol. Dean has secrets, Castiel is conflicted by duty, and did we mention he's already destined to die in 1789?

the Cas art looks really good, Dean OTOH looks off.

when is this story supposed to take place?

I thought it was around 1789, so the sentence "Gabriel was still awake, sitting by the fire as he rolled his drink contemplatively against the cranked up sound of Tristian & Isolde" makes no sense. Because as far as i know records and players did not exist and Tristian and Isolde was not written yet.

I'm really confused.

There's time travel involved, but I think that Dean is supposed to be from the early 20th century?

I don't know if Gabriel is also time travelling, or what the hell is going on.

This is odd, and confusing, but I liked the idea behind it.

Brief summary!

Dean is from 1911, stealing items from Castiel's 18th century palace of a home. Castiel almost catches him a few times, gets a crush, they make out. Sam finds Dean's magic time travel pen one day, gets them both transported back to the 18th century, and Sam has to convince Castiel to help him get his brother.

The real problem is that I had no idea what was going on. I still don't know where Gabriel got a record player. I don't know how a poor family managed to afford a car in 1911, or why Sam thought that he couldn't explain the existence of the United States to Castiel, if the US Constitution had been signed for two years at that point, and the Declaration of Independence had been around for thirteen. It took until part two before we even find out what year Sam and Dean are supposed to be from, and there are so many anachronisms (not small ones, either), that it was honestly hard to tell.

Also, the author tries to make a case that she was at least trying to reflect the ideas of the respective time periods in her author's notes-except everyone is okay with the gay sex. Which, okay, you could try to make a case for upper class indulgences and somethingorother for Castiel, but 1911 Kansas would not exactly be the most gay-friendly place. Even without a possible Methodist revival.

I would love to read a better researched, more fleshed out version of this fic. Actually, connecting John's 'delusions' of hunting demons to the religious revivals that would have just been tapering out when Mary died would have been interesting. The connection between the two past viewpoints, both of them remote to the contemporary reader is kind of fascinating. And I like time travel.
