Fic (Until You Wake Up) by demonic_fish

Wordcount: 6,428

Summary: Dean is an FBI agent who's been trying to take down a crime lord named Alistair for his whole career, and, naturally, things go spectacularly haywire when his cover is blown.

SA

The story's labelled D/C but I feel the Dean-Alastair is just as prominent.

Wish one of them could have grabbed this prompt first, tbh :(

Didn't like that the author went AU with it - I don't normally like SPN AUs anyway, but the SPN verse with the Dean and Alastair relationship is so well set up and developed already, imo. It's not horribly written, but I didn't find it engaging, and it seemed very rushed. I wouldn't really recommend this one.

The art is fantastic, though. Especially the first piece, there's so much emotion and potential there and I'm very disappointed that the fic didn't live up to it for me.

AU universe where Sam and Dean work in law enforcement and Castiel is Dean's new cop partner. The current timeline has Dean failing to recuperate from his capture and horrific torture at the hands of Alistair, with flashbacks to their earlier encounter.

This story read like the goriest excerpts from a truly intriguing story, all hurt, pretty much no comfort, despite the genre classification in the author notes. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty well written, very raw and visceral but the amount of trauma at one point got too much for me. One of the reasons might be the style: the author opted for a non-linear story structure, with some going back and forth between different traumas in Dean's life, which didn't really work for me because there was unrelenting misery in all timelines and this story telling device seemed like something designed to mask the scarcity of actual plot or conflict.

There's also the issue of this story reading like a scaled-down version of a longer tale, one that would better flesh out the relationships between Sam (recovering addict) and Dean or Dean and his new cop partner Castiel, and one that would make all the diverse timelines actually work. As it is, the first encounter between Dean and Alistair is narrated at length but it's also not really addressed and there's very little fallout (even as far as what Dean and Sam's life looked like afterward).

All in all, the story is very readable if you've got a strong stomach for torture and enjoy hurt Dean. It's not very satisfying if you're looking for strong interpersonal relationships or indeed some dose of comfort.

SA. I forgot to say: despite the heading, there's very little Dean/Castiel in this story and the rating is for violence only.

Also, the art is sensational.

Thanks for the report! Skipping this since there's little D/C.

For what it's worth, I'm pretty much only interested in D/C and I loved this fic. I skimmed the Alastair parts and the D/C sections were worth it, even if it didn't proceed beyond a kiss, since all the UST was delicious.

I like the fic, but I don't understand why it's split into two parts AND there is no link to the 2nd part. :\
